Our relationships with our earthly fathers were designed to reflect our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Sadly, the reality of sin means that many of us have relationships with our dads fraught with pain, disappointment, or absence. This devotional consists of ten sections which point to God’s perfect display of fatherhood toward us as His children. Scripture readings, reflection questions, and prayers help to reveal His loving heart. If your relationship with your earthly father is marked by heartache, or if you need a rich reminder of the goodness of the Lord, 40 Days to God, My Father will be a balm to your soul.

More from Rosann
40 Days to God, My Father was born out of a difficult season with my pastor-father’s struggle with substance abuse. As I walked through the painful circumstances with my earthly father, I found myself grappling with trusting God as a good Father. I sensed the Lord inviting me on a journey to know Him as my One True Father. It was through reading the Scriptures––where I saw the Lord’s character revealed––prayer, and reflection that I found my trust restored.
I want to share the same truths I found with others who may be doubting the goodness of the Lord. Assuredly, He is the perfect Father each of us desperately needs. I pray readers will come away from the book knowing that He is faithful, loving, and kind.
Interview with the Author
- If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?
If I could invite one person to dinner, it would be Joni Eareckson Tada. Her resilience in the midst of suffering inspires me. And her joy is contagious. Every time I hear her speak I am amazed by her ability to find the Lord’s goodness in the hard places of life.
I would ask her what her favorite foods are and plan the menu around her wishes. But I’d probably cater the meal because I’d be too afraid it would turn out terribly if I cooked it. 😉
- Does writing energize or exhaust you?
I find writing energizing for the most part. But there are times when it’s tiring if I’m writing about a tough topic or sharing painful personal stories. I do tend to be a reflective writer and aim to invite the reader to walk alongside me. My hope is that as we walk the hard path, we end up closer to the Lord. Journeying this way takes energy and I find rest is necessary afterwards.
- How did writing this book grow you spiritually?
Writing this book helped me grow spiritually because, not only was it a documentation of how the Lord showed up for His children in biblical times, it was a recording of His presence, care, and sufficiency in my own life. I also had to trust God for strength, help, and direction as I worked through the fears that came along with writing my first manuscript. I often felt ill-equipped to get it done, but it was by the Lord’s grace that I completed it. His faithfulness was revealed through it all!
- Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.
Readers may not know that I work part-time as an Archive Specialist at the Billy Graham Archive and Research Center. I help answer research requests and have the joy of partnering with a wonderful group of people to continue the ministry of the late Billy Graham––and share the Gospel. It’s very rewarding.
- What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
The Bible is absolutely the most influential book I’ve ever read––and it continues to do so. As far as authors, this is a tough question for me to answer because many authors have influenced me over the years.
If I have to choose one, it would be Elisabeth Elliot. I discovered her writing in my college days and continued to read her works. I appreciated her vulnerability, willingness to tackle painful topics, and ultimately point to Christ as our source for every need. She was not only a talented writer, but a wonderful encourager. I desire to do the same.
