More from Susan

Thank you so much for being part of this incredible journey. I am grateful for your support in helping to share my debut book!

I’m thrilled to introduce readers to more than just a novel—this is a journey into God’s love and mercy, reaching even the darkest places. Rooted in scripture, infused with traces of Jewish folklore, and written with the utmost respect for Jesus, 63 Hours in Hell examines themes of faith, forgiveness, redemption, and the healing of broken relationships.

If you’re a fan of The Chosen series, this book will resonate with you. It imagines what happened during Jesus’ three days in the depths of hell. The story follows a jilted bride, her brother, and the good thief on a quest: finding key fragments, freeing hell’s prisoners, fighting the devil, and facing their own inner demons.

A Special Message

Readers have shared how they found a personal message within its pages—something they needed to hear at just the right moment. I pray 63 Hours in Hell offers encouragement to you as well.

An Inspired Journey

As you can see in the photo, my furry companions have been a steady source of joy throughout my writing journey. (Fun fact: my majestic, wolf-like dog even inspired the demon dog in the book!)

An Invitation

I didn’t truly discover Jesus until later in life, which makes me even more in awe of His boundless love, sacrifice, and resurrection—and His patience throughout my personal transformation. This book is more than a story; it’s an invitation to understand why Jesus’ death and resurrection remain pivotal—yesterday, today, and forever.

Thank you for joining me on this journey and for sharing this book with others. Your support means the world to me!

Happy reading,

Susan L. Davis

Interview with the Author

  • What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

While my literary pilgrimages have been limited, I’ve found inspiration close to home. I had the chance to visit The Wardrobe at the Wade Center in Wheaton, Illinois—a fascinating piece of literary history tied to C. S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Standing before it, I couldn’t help but reflect on how stories have the power to transport us to other worlds while deepening our understanding of our own.

In homage to Lewis, I modeled my demon character, Mahway, on Screwtape from The Screwtape Letters. Like Screwtape, Mahway is cunning, ruthless, and flawed—yet strangely relatable.

  • The hardest scene to write, without a doubt, came in the final chapters—spoiler alert (but not really)—when Jesus ascends into heaven, all seen through Dismas’ eyes. Imagining this extraordinary moment was no small task. What would Dismas see in the throne room of God? What would he feel standing before such magnificence? And how would someone—not perfect but redeemed—process such overwhelming glory firsthand?

I worked hard to remain true to scripture while allowing creative space to bring this scene to life. Research was absolutely key. I explored theology and scripture in depth and even drew from modern accounts of near-death experiences, where people describe glimpses of heaven. These insights shaped how I imagined Dismas experiencing heaven’s splendor and how his transformation—both physical and spiritual—might unfold in that sacred moment.

  • If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do

Honestly, I wouldn’t change anything. As a child and teenager, I was a voracious reader—I devoured books across genres and styles. They say to become a talented writer, you need to first become a great reader, and I think I checked that box early on.

What has changed since then is the way people read. Attention spans are shorter now, and writing styles have evolved to reflect that. Descriptions are leaner, and pacing is faster. As a writer today, I’ve had to adapt to those shifts—but my love of reading as a kid laid the foundation for everything I write now.

  • What do you do when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing, I love spending quality time with my family. Walking our dogs in the park is always a refreshing way to clear my head, and movie nights with my son are a perfect time to relax and share some laughs. Shopping trips with my daughter are always a treat—she has a knack for spotting those unique little extras I’d miss if I went shopping alone.

In the evenings, I unwind with a good book. Reading sharpens my mind, stirs my creativity, and keeps me inspired as a writer. It’s my peaceful escape and the perfect way to recharge for whatever lies ahead.

  • What is your favorite childhood book?

Harriet the Spy was my favorite childhood book. I felt for Harriet because the other kids didn’t understand that she wasn’t being mean—she was doing character analysis! Even as a child, I could appreciate her curiosity and her habit of observing the world around her. In some ways, Harriet inspired me to pay closer attention to people and their stories, which is something I carry with me even today as a writer.
