Welcome to the Winter Warriors club. A club made up of “seasoned” women who have a desire to give their heart to Abba even during the phases of their winter season. Maybe you’ve been going through changes that have you discouraged and ready to throw in the towel.
Change is inevitable: hearing aids, eyeglasses, and a knee replacement are just a few I’ve already experienced. Not to mention the changes to my body shape and style – yikes! Maybe you’ve been through some of these changes, too. If we dwell too long on the inevitable, it can be easy to get discouraged and want to just sit down and give up.
In this study you will be treated to twenty-four devotions by “seasoned” authors who continue to be active for the Lord in many ways – large or small – it is all for God’s glory.
You will hear me saying often: “God did not stamp an expiration date on our forehead.” While studying these women from the Bible, you will discover that God can and will use you even in your winter season.
As my friend Beth says, “There’s only one alternative to growing old.” And we all know what that is – something we will all have to face eventually, but until then, let’s make a pact to grow old as “seasoned” women being Winter Warriors for our Abba!

Interview with the Author

  • If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?

This is an interesting question. Of course, I want to say Jesus and I would sit at his feet like Mary, but I’m afraid I’m more of a Martha than a Mary. But, if I could invite someone I know it would be my friend and mentor, Babbie Mason. I think I would cook a big pot of soup or maybe a pot roast. And I couldn’t wait until after we ate, so we could sit around and chat. Of course, I would ask her to sing some while she was here.

  • Does writing energize or exhaust you?

To be honest, writing does not come naturally for me. I have to put a lot of thought into it so I would say it is not necessarily exhausting, but does take some effort. However, once I get going the words come easier and I find a smooth flow.

  • How did writing this book grow you spiritually?

Studying the women of the Bible who I presented in my book “Bloom in Your Winter Season” was eye-opening. I’d heard of all the names of these faithful ladies, but did not know them up close and personal. After studying them more intimately I grew to know them on a deeper level. This helped me to grow in my winter season as well.

  • What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love nature. I like to walk, hike (if you can call it that:) and love to take macro pictures of flowers and insects. God’s world is so beautiful and when I am outside it always reminds me of Romans 1:20: “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky.  Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

  • Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I love horses! I lived and breathed horses during my teenage years – forget boys. But, honestly, I have been a horse lover for many years even though I don’t ride anymore.

  • What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Anne George, who was a Southern Cozy Mystery writer, influenced my mystery writing early on. Then I discovered Christian Fiction and there were many of the Christian Mystery writers who influenced me. As far as my Bible Studies, I’d say Babbie Mason, Liz Curtis Higgs, and Lisa Harper are a few who had an influence on my writing.

  • Favorite quote?

I don’t have a favorite quote, but one of my favorite verses is 2 Cor. 1:4: “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”

  • When did you start writing?

I seriously started writing around 2000. I wrote for a historic magazine, “Georgia Backroads,” many years before my first book was published in 2011. It was a great way to get my feet wet and I loved writing for them. I would interview people for the stories and also take pictures to go along with the story so it was right up my alley.

  • What is the most difficult part about writing for you?

Discipline – making myself sit down and write. I love the research part but the writing is like pulling teeth with me. However, once I get going the words do come easier – it’s just getting started.

  • How do you do research for your books?

My cozy mysteries were all researched on site. I went to the towns they are set in and visited many of the places I write about. I would take hundreds of pictures, and interview people who lived in the area. I would also use maps, tourist material, etc. Anything that would give me more information about the area. Even though my mysteries were fiction, all of the settings were real. As far as my Bible Studies, I used the Bible to study the women and also used information on the computer. I have several books on women in the Bible that are my go to books for learning about them individually.
