More from Sarah
Life has a funny way of mirroring fiction at times, and that happened to me with Fatal Past—but not when I was writing it! I wanted my hero’s (and heroine’s) son to be school-age but not too old, so I picked second grade, which put him at age 7. This is such a fun age, as they are independent and inquisitive, and you start to really see their personalities develop.
Little did I know when I wrote this last fall that I would be teaching twenty-three second graders as a long-term substitute this current school year! I began in mid-September and will continue through early March while their regular teacher is out on maternity leave. It’s been challenging but rewarding as they expand their knowledge and build on their kindergarten and first-grade foundations.
Your turn—how has something you read resonated with you lately? Has a storyline mirrored something happening in your own life?

Interview with the Author
- What literary pilgrimages have you gone on? I haven’t gone on a literary pilgrimage but I have visited places where some of my favorite books have been set. For example, when my daughters and I went to England a few years ago, we visited Bath, and it was such fun to see where Jane Austen set many of her novels. One literary pilgrimage I would like to do is Prince Edward Island to see in person the setting for the Anne of Green Gables novels.
- How do you select the names of your characters? I have a baby book of names with their meanings for the first names of my main and prominent secondary characters. For last names, I use a couple of old phone books. I find those provide good last names and sometimes, I’ll find a first name and last name in the phone books, but I don’t use a real person’s full name.
- If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do? Finish more books! I started so many novels or short stories in my childhood/teenage years but rarely finished them. It wasn’t until I was well into adulthood that I had the epiphany that to progress as a writer, I had to complete a manuscript. National Novel Writing Month helped me accomplish that, and I have many completed rough drafts of novels on my hard drive that will never see the light of day. But finishing them helped me become a better writer.
- What comes first, the plot or characters? Generally the plot or central mystery idea. That’s what comes to mind for me first, then I’ll think about the hero and heroine. I don’t plot for the most part, but start writing once I know the central mystery and who my hero and heroine are.
- If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook? Since I’m writing this drinking tea from my Jane Austen mug—and I love Jane Austen’s novels—it would be Jane Austen. But I wouldn’t cook—I’d take her out to a tea shop so we could simply spend time chatting about plots and people.
