My Thoughts
If you want to be a writer, if you are a writer, or if you want to understand how authors work to build their character, this is the book for you. Carol does a great job breaking down a character and it’s parts. I loved that she included fill in the blank sections to help people really build their character. It makes this book conducive to the major different types of learning. Those who prefer to just read through a book for help, and those who like to fill in information as they go. While I knew most of what Carol was teaching in her book, I was still able to pick up new tips and perspectives on character-building. The wonderful thing about writing is that there is always room to go; so even if you already know what a book is saying, it’s always good to have your ideals reinforced or reevaluated.
I’m not sure if I’ve shared before, but I’m currently working towards my MFA in Creative Writing. This program takes you through writing a book from planning stages, to marketing your work, to everything in between. Through the Editing and Coaching class I’m finishing, I’ve discovered an unknown desire. I want to partner with high schools and teach creative writing to students who truly want to learn the craft. After reading through Carol’s book, I will use this to help the students learn to build their characters. I found the book to be easy to understand and pretty straightforward, so I think it’ll be useful in this context.
I’m sure this is stating the obvious, but I just want to point out that I found this book to be more useful if one is writing a character-driven novel. I don’t think authors who write plot-driven novels will find this as helpful.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this wonderful character help book, and I would highly recommend it to author and aspiring writers because I think you would benefit greatly from Carol’s teaching.
I received a copy of this book from the author via Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review and received no compensation in exchange for this review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
About the Author
More from Carol
Focused Backstory resulted from a personal quest to please industry critics who suggested I keep character history out of the first pages of my novels. My initial questions to this advice were: What? Why? I searched for resources to figure out how to write a more powerful beginning without relying on the past but found little help. On a mission to find answers, I studied popular books, television and movies to abstract what made stories work and — boom! I found it! We can break down backstory into simple pieces to use flexibly in any story without compromising artistry. This book provides definitions, examples, worksheets, templates, and comics to help writers study the art of using powerful character histories to keep readers turning pages. I’m so excited to offer this resource and hope it will empower your writing as it has mine.
