More from Keon

How would you like to get a personal letter from someone? Most people like real mail, especially if its from a person who truly cares about you. What if that letter not only shared their affection but it revealed the answers to some of life’s most profound questions? God has written you such a letter, the Bible! Actually, the Bible is a collection of all God’s written messages to you.

This fact was impressed on me as I read the New Testament book of Hebrews. It opens with a bold statement. God had given messages to humanity in ancient times through prophets and angels. Finally, God sent Jesus, the Ultimate Messenger with the ultimate message that is vital for every person.

This captured my attention and made me wonder how the previous messages in the Bible led up to Jesus and His message? Researching that question took me on an exciting journey of discovery, encouragement, and warning in God’s Word. The result is my book, Have You Heard from God Lately?  It summarizes major Bible themes to help you navigate the amazing Book. I hope it inspires you to open God’s letter and realize just how much He cares for you!

Interview with the Author

1. Does writing energize or exhaust you?
a. Writing is energizing for me because I write about my favorite book, the
Bible. I love talking about God’s Word with others, so the preparation to
write is really a deep personal Bible study. Seeing what the Lord has said,
praying about it, and thinking about how it applies to me and others is very
fulfilling as I put pen to paper.

2. How did writing this book grow you spiritually?
a. Thinking about the wonderful messages God has for us in the Bible and
how few people read it, made me sad. People don’t read for a variety of
reasons, but if it is because they think the Bible is too hard or too big to
understand, I can do something about that. So, it was important that my
book present “messages from Heaven” from the Bible in a clear, accurate,
and understandable way. The Bible study that was required for that was
greatly rewarding as I got to connect creation with our purpose for life, our
inability to be good on our own with our need for a Savior, and God’s
wisdom for our daily lives.

3. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
a. When I’m not writing, I enjoy activities with my family. It could be bike
rides, visiting museums, or simply playing games. From board games to
thinking games the interaction with my loved ones is very rewarding. Even
making a mess in the kitchen is enjoyable when we get to eat the fruit of
our labor. The clean up, however, is not so enjoyable.

4. When did you start writing?
a. I started a regular newsletter to friends and family after graduating from
the Naval Academy. Since there was only so much to share about me, I
turned it into a commentary on life, politics, and the Bible for a few years.
Yet, I did not try writing a book until 9 years later in 2003. My first attempt
was a science fiction story that did not progress very far, however, I knew I
wanted to be a writer at some point. Years later in 2017, when I finished

the draft of my first book, Seeking the Lord, a 30 Day Start to Your
Journey, I began to think of myself as a writer, even though the book
would not be published for another three years.

5. What is the most difficult part about writing for you?
a. The most difficult part of working on a book is finding time to do it.
Typically, I write in the early morning after praying because the house is
still quiet, but I can only give so much time because I have to prepare for
my job. After reviewing where I had left off and thinking about what to
write next, it can be time to go to work. That is really frustrating, and
getting only a paragraph or two written in a day greatly extends the writing
process. On weekends I can get in a good couple of hours writing, which
is satisfying.

6. How do you do research for your books?
a. Once I have a book idea, I’ll do initial research for maybe two weeks. This
is typically looking for Bible verses related to the idea. I’ll use that
information to choose major themes and put them into an outline. Then I
start writing individual chapters and do more research more as I go. The
ongoing research involves everything from reading Bible commentaries
and looking at Hebrew or Greek Bible word meanings to internet searches
for news or history to provide examples that fit with a topic. Sometimes I’ll
have to stop writing for several days to investigate a subject in more detail
to ensure the chapter is accurate and fits with larger themes. Starting and
stopping writing might bother others, so I understand that some authors
like to do most research before writing. However, since I generally keep
my train of thought during the research time, it’s not a bother for me.
Having to stop research or writing due to time constrains is my challenge.
