“Simon! Good to see you, man.” His smile didn’t quite reach his eyes, which flickered with relief and something else—was it apprehension?
“How’s the fam?” Simon nodded his thanks to the bartender who placed his drink in front of him. Scotch, neat, just the way he liked it.
Javier raised his glass. “Here’s hoping Tyler stays clean this time.” He took a sip of his bourbon. “I told Liz I won’t bail him out again.”
Simon’s chest tightened. Javier had spoken of his stepson’s drug addiction. Now that Simon had a daughter, a grown daughter, he could relate to Javier’s concern about his kid. No matter the age, parents always worry.
“Enough about me. Now, tell me about your new fiancée and your newfound daughter.” Javier raised his glass to Simon.
He displayed photos on his phone. “Olivia is doing some consulting with the FBI, and Lily actually works here. She’s in charge of the Private Select Program.”
Javier leaned in to look at the photos. “Oh, I met your daughter. She checked me in and escorted me to my suite. I was so tired that I didn’t even connect her to you.” He swallowed and lowered his voice. “I’ve heard rumors about Olivia. Is she really with the Bureau? Or is she still a spook?”
