Dani popped up and walked to the photograph. “These are just some of the sweetest people that ever walked the earth.” She crooned. “This here is my granny, Faye Riley, with my granddaddy Connor. And these are their children, who all still help with the business, in one way or another. They’re Cecilia, Kathryn, John, and James Patrick. And—”
“Whatever are you doing?” A harsh female voice sounded, accompanied by the clip-clop of footsteps on the hardwood floor. “You aren’t introducing our Riley family to a Heartland?”
“Well, I sure am,” Dani walked to the pale, wrinkled lady, and put her arm around her. “And this my mommy, Susanna Clements Riley.”
Toni smiled and nodded. “Of course, Mrs. Riley. I remember meeting you many years ago.”
“Yes,” the petite lady nodded in curt fashion, and her gray curls bounced. “I met you near Riley Lake, after you let your brothers drown.”
Toni’s mouth formed an O. She stood, speechless.
Dani’s eyebrows shot up and she shook her head. “Mama, I’m sure you didn’t mean what you just said. That was most unkind. I would appreciate you rethinking that statement.”
“I am old, but I remember.”
Toni’s face heated. “I was a young child. How can you think that? What do you remember? I don’t recall that you were even there.”
“Well, it was right there in the police report. Something about you playing and didn’t notice that your brothers were missing! How could you not notice that your two brothers were missing?”
