Meet Lisa
The diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder initially shattered LISA BURRIS BURNS’ ministry dreams as a vocalist and worship leader. Despite this, God opened opportunities for her journey and abilities to expand beyond what she ever anticipated for herself — to acting, stage performance, set design, and writing. As a vocal and performance coach with K.C. Superstar, a Kansas City-based competition likened to “American Idol,” she is passionate about fine-tuning artists’ creative expressions. Lisa thrives on the artistic process, especially everything yarn and crafty.
This avid Kansas City Chiefs fan lives with her husband, Randy, in Blue Springs, Missouri. The Burns have served in marriage and family ministry since 1988. They have six fantastic children, two amazing son-in-loves, and five adorable granddaughters.

Interview with the Authors
- If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?
Lisa- My Grandmothers. I think it would be really cool to prepare a meal from some of the recipes I have in their handwriting. They were both such a huge part of my childhood, but I’ve often wondered what it would be like to speak with them as an adult woman. So many things I would love to know.
Amber: Anne Lamott, but we’d be heading to a restaurant. Cooking isn’t my forte. I love Japanese Soul Food—Ramen Bowls, British food (my hubby is a Brit), European Pastries, and Andy’s Frozen Custard
- Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Lisa- Honesty I would have to say a little bit of both! There are moments that feel like I’m walking uphill, on a windy day, in quicksand…it can be draining as you struggle with each word, editing phrases for a better flow. On the opposite side of that I’ve learned that it can be such an energizing kick when you finalize those lines, feeling that they clearly and creatively say what you need them to.
- How did writing this book grow you spiritually?
Lisa: It has reinforced my understanding of who God is. Being front and center to the stories of His faithfulness in the lives of all our book contributors has been such an inspiration to me. Difficulties, pain and struggle can be redeemed. In his hands they are rich soil for our growth.
- What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Lisa: I absolutely love spending time with my family, traveling when I can, and all things creative. Loom knitting and genealogy are two of my favorites!
- Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.
Amber: Most people might not know that I playfully refer to some of my quirky phrases as “Amberisms”. It’s an inside joke that not everyone outside my brain may grasp. My family are also reptile educators in my Springfield Missouri community so we have a zoo of 10 snakes and 3 lizards in our home.
Lisa: I absolutely love to watch those wilderness survival shows where you’re dropped off in some remote place to build shelter and find food. I wouldn’t last a day out there on my own, but I sure like to think I could! Lol!
- What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
Lisa: I love to read so many different authors, but some of my favorites are Maya Angelou, Ann Voskamp, Harper Lee, and taking it back to childhood, Laura Ingalls Wilder. (Don’t tell anyone but I probably read the Little House series once a year even into highschool!)
- Favorite quote?
Amber: “When everything seems hopeless, believe anyway.” – Romans 4:17 (MSG).
- When did you start writing?
Lisa: I began writing on some freelance projects with Amber a little over 10 years ago. I really didn’t know if I would be good at it or even enjoy it. I’m a nerdy book girl, so I’m thinking Amber knew I would love it with a little push. I started with interviews and creating Q & A’s for a magazine and found out I really enjoy the writing process.
- What is the most difficult part about writing for you?
Lisa- Getting started! I’m a processor. I have to chew on the idea quite a bit, jotting down notes along the way. I have multiple conversations with those close to me (poor Amber has been on the other end of those conversations OFTEN!) trying to flesh things out a bit before I finally jump in.
Amber: With this specific book we had to create a coherent story with multiple voices and keep it engaging and non-repetitive. We also wanted to include diverse voices in this project and that took a while to track down. I get very anxious before I write, even something small, so I put it off and because I have ADHD often get distracted by other things on the to-do list. I’m also very forgetful.
- How do you do research for your books?
Amber: The research involved over 35 women through intensive interviews, including writers and non-writers. Zoom sessions with my co-author Lisa ensured a powerful and poignant book without repetition, a process that proved to be demanding yet rewarding.
