Interview with the Author

  • What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

There is an author – not a Christian – who recently passed away. There’s one book of hers I read every year called “The Gate Crasher.” It was published in 2009. The reason I love it is because of the way she gradually shows the character’s personalities. I think it’s her best work.

  • How do you select the names of your characters?

This is one of the most fun parts of writing. I sit and think about the personality of the character, then find a name that might adequately work with their personality. In this current book, I wanted a strong female name and “Dale” came to mind. Plus it worked for the ‘meet cute’ when Mark doesn’t realize she’s a woman, not the man he thinks his brother hired.

  • What is your favorite childhood book?

My grandparents bought me Marian’s Big Book of Bible Stories when I was in first or second grade (I was an early reader). I read that cover to cover more than a dozen times. The pictures in the book were vivid and the stories so good!

  • If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

I would have considered going to college.

  • What comes first, the plot or characters?

Definitely plot. A lot of my ideas come from dreams – I see the character, but he or she is involved in a plot.

  • What do you like to do when you are not writing?

As a full-time RVer, my favorite thing is to bring in the slides, ‘batten down the hatches,’ and get on the road. There’s nothing like sitting high up in our motor home with that huge windshield offering the best view of the passing landscape.
