About the Author
Award-winning author and speaker Debbi Migit lives in central Illinois, surrounded by pumpkin patches and cornfields. Her first book, Child of Promise, is the true love story of a family formed through adoption. After ten years of infertility, Debbi and her husband Phil were just months from adopting when God said, “Not this way.” Child of Promise is the story of audacious faith resulting in multiple miracles. It encourages readers to remember their own promises and believe again.
Debbi has won multiple awards and contests, writing stories that are filled with faith and hope. She loves to share personal anecdotes about God’s faithfulness, infusing her talks with authenticity and humor. Debbi and Phil are the adoptive parents of Alex, Ethan, and Kate. The God-ordained spacing of their children offered the unique opportunity to parent a teen and two toddlers–at the same time. This is the season Debbi fondly calls the TNT years!
Debbi’s hobbies include reading, writing, and avoiding arithmetic. Her favorite color is turquoise, and she collects Trixie Belden books and typewriters. If playing Candy Crush was a paying gig, she would be rich.
Debbi’s Justice, Montana series begins with September Shadows, released in February, 2021. After the mysterious death of their parents, Jess Thomas and her sisters are determined to stay together and make a new life for themselves, which includes faith-testing danger, adventure, and romance.
October Outlaw was released in the fall of 2021, followed by November Knight in November 2023.
The series will conclude with December Dreams, and January Justice in 2025

Interview with the Author
- How do you select the names of your characters?
I’d like to know the answer to that myself! Sometimes I look at a character’s name and wonder, “What was I thinking? Did I need a nap?” But I love my main character’s names. Cole is named for my great, great, grandfather, Colby Campbell. Jess and her name arrived together as a package deal. No other name fits this daring, sometimes sassy, loyal, tender-hearted young woman. She was Jess from the beginning.
Sly’s name surprised me. It’s a nickname for Sylvia and I’ve always thought it was unique. I used it as a place holder for the oldest Thomas sister as I was writing the first book, September Shadows. I worried that it might be too unique and started to change it, but it was too late. Sly refused to be renamed. Thomas was the last name of a very dear friend who passed away several years ago. She loved reading and even traveled with me to a few writer’s conferences. I wanted to honor Jenny by using her last name.
- What was your hardest scene to write?
I love to write Jess and Cole together. I laugh when I think of the scene where they are discussing the relationship between Cole’s brother, Nick, and Jess’s sister, Sly.
Excerpt:
“Your brother made my sister cry.” I try to keep accusation out of my voice but judging by Cole’s startled expression, I fail.
“He did?”
I roll my eyes and barely stop from muttering, ‘clueless.’
“Yes, he did.” I cross my arms and gaze out the window of the truck, pretending a deep fascination with the countryside.
Cole swings the truck onto the road that leads to Pastor Jarrod and Anna’s house. I had mixed feelings when Cole asked if he could drive me tonight. I want to spend time with him, of course, but I’m also mad at his brother for hurting my sister.
“Why?” Cole asks.
“I don’t know, you tell me. I asked Sly, but she won’t say.” Frustration colors my tone.
Cole glances over, raising one eyebrow. “But you think my brother took me out for a latte to talk about his relationship problems?”
“Don’t be sexist,” I snap, but I glance away, so Cole misses my reluctant grin. For a second, I picture Nick and Cole sitting in a cozy booth at Rosie’s Beans and Greens, eating salads and drinking frothy coffees. An unexpected snort escapes, and I cover it with a cough.
Of course, my hardest scene was also between Jess and Cole. I won’t give any spoilers but let’s just say it was one of the rare times I cried while writing. As my friends and family can tell you, I DO NOT cry recreationally, so that proves it was a difficult scene to write.
- If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult what would you do?
I would believe in myself more. I know that sounds trite, but I spent many years feeling like a fraud. Among writers this is known as imposter syndrome, and I don’t think it ever leaves completely. I would have started to look at my writing as my eventual vocation, rather than a hobby, and I would have invested more in studying the craft of writing.
- What comes first, the plot or characters?
For the Justice, Montana series, the setting came first. When I was a young girl my family visited a working movie set in Arizona. It was an old west town, and I was fascinated. That interest eventually moved to abandoned mining towns or ghost towns, and I knew I wanted to set my book in or around such a place. I researched until I discovered Bannack, Montana with its well preserved buildings and colorful history. Jess was already waiting for me in Bannack, ready to start our adventures.
- If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?
I had to give this question waaaay more thought than I expected! I’m assuming it needs to be a living person, so here we go…may I have the envelope please.
Ree Drummond aka The Pioneer Woman
I started following Ree’s blog before she was ever famous. I like to think I ‘discovered’ her. LOL. First of all, she’s funny, not fussy. I like that in a dinner guest. We have similar values, and in a way, she’s living my fantasy life on a ranch with real horses. I think she would be a hoot!
As for dinner-who can out-cook The Pioneer Woman? Not me, that’s who! Due to physical challenges, I haven’t cooked in several years. But for Ree, I’d try. I’d probably fry catfish since that seems to be my kid’s favorite meal that I used to make. Real mashed potatoes, corn casserole, fresh baked bread (yes, I used to do that, too) and a tossed salad with fresh tomatoes from someone’s garden. Sweet tea, and Texas sheet cake for dessert, using Ree’s recipe, of course. Yes, I know that’s a lot of carbs but it’s Ree “The Pioneer Woman” Drummond! We can diet tomorrow.
