Book Excerpt

I bet the kids don’t say “going steady” anymore—maybe we could just say that we were committed to each other. But that had nothing to do with what I knew about him and everything to do with the connection we had and the choice to carry the relationship onward. We continue to view our relationship that way: a commitment to each other.

Knowledge was not the foundation of that relationship, and it still isn’t. Knowledge I have of my husband, or my friends and family, is not what makes a relationship. I know some things about my husband, for example. However, the relationship is not rooted in the factual information I know about him. The relationship is based on the interactions we have, how we care for one another, how we show our love, how we spend time together, and how we create something (maybe that relationship) together. It is about expressing love, trust, and growth together. My marriage and friendships grow or die based on what we are doing together and sharing with one another, not based on the amount I know about them.

Similarly, I can know a lot about God by reading his Word and by fellowshipping with other believers. But he invites us into a loving, personal relationship with him. He is relational in nature.
