Interview with the Author
- What does the first part of your writing process look like?
The first part of my writing process is sitting and staring at a piece of paper, letting something
inside me rise to the surface of my mind so I can jot it down and begin to develop it. Writing, for
me, starts from a deep place — what’s moving me, what’s going on inside that I need to give
birth to: something stirs on the inside and causes me to feel fulfilled in the exercise of writing it
down.
- What part of your writing process would surprise readers?
What surprises readers most is that I’m writing at all. If I rewind to my early days — grammar
school, high school — writing did not intrigue me in the least. My high school report card scores
were not strong in English and grammar, so it’s truly been a process of development. If you
were to ask my English teacher whether I’d ever write a book, they probably would have
laughed at the question.
- Do you write with a pen and paper first, some by hand and some electronically, or
all electronically?
Absolutely — by hand. I don’t write anything electronically. I seem to do my best work by
allowing whatever is in me to come out through writing it myself. It may be a little old-school, but it works for me. The pad and pencil are still my best tools.
- What’s your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part is the delivery — not necessarily to a publisher or printer, but to the
delivery of something that feels important to me on paper. It’s that moment of getting it
out of my mind, out of my heart, and onto the page and being able to look at it and think,
Wow, that’s really on paper. And then the structuring — taking what’s initially on paper
and walking through how to shape it — that is a very fulfilling process.
- What made you choose to write this book when you did?
The biggest influence came from a sermon series I had preached on the subject of painkillers.
When I finished that series, I immediately knew it was something that could help so many
people. I felt it was valuable — that people could sit down, read the book, and identify their own lives in each chapter. After the sermon series, I thought, Wow, this really could help a lot of
people.
- What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The hardest part was simply starting — initiating that starting point and believing that I could do
- That took real convincing of myself. Figuring out the process, not knowing how it all worked, wondering who would publish it or whether it would even be published — there’s a lot that goes into it. I knew it was going to be a task that required time, energy, and focus.
