Interview with the Author
- What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?
I’ll be taking my first literary pilgrimage next spring when our church plans to visit Israel. I am beyond excited!
- What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?
My favorite under-appreciated novel … hm … that’s a tough question because I’ve read so many books over the years.
Tale of Two Cities has to be my all-time favorite. I was mesmerized from start to finish, and it still fascinates me.
- How do you select the names of your characters?
Selecting the names of my characters comes easily for me. Long before I begin to write, conversations with my character have already taken place in my mind. Because I’ve known them—they’ve shared their quirks and personalities—their names match who they are.
- What was your hardest scene to write?
My hardest scene to write was in my previous novel, “Journaled With Love.” I ached for Ryan Tiggs who, through no fault of his own, was about to be fired. He’d done everything to help the company flourish. Yet his boss eventually kicked him to the curb and replaced him with her daughter (his love interest). Though maligned and humiliated, he stayed true to who he was.
- What is your favorite childhood book?
My two favorite childhood books were (and still are) the Bible and Little Women.
- If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?
To become a better writer as an adult, I’d write more and enter creative writing contests. I wrote in secret, never exposed it to the light of day – big mistake. A mentor at that time might’ve made all the difference.
- What comes first, the plot or characters?
Tough question!
For me, plot and characters happen simultaneously. The characters begin telling me what the story will be about, which exposes who they are to me. I’ve never written a story where I didn’t know the plot and the characters at the same time. I’ll let you know if that day comes… J
- Who is the author you most admire in your genre?
I most admire Becky Wade (succinct plots); Gabrielle Meyer (clever plot twists); Lenora Worth (dedicated author); Lisa Wingate (amazing storytelling).
- What do you like to do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing (and in no particular order) I love to have coffee with friends; play games; take long walks with my hubby and Tucker our dog; visit with my children and grandkids; read.
- If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?
Jesus. I’d make stuffed shells (think lasagna), meatballs, a green bean casserole (made with bacon and blue cheese), sourdough bread, green salad with pears and pecans, and a ganache-covered cheesecake for dessert.
Or maybe I’d ask Him to make His favorite meal because it would be PERFECT! J
