The air carried that in-between Florida chill that never quite committed to either winter or spring. And the breeze lifted the loose strands around her ponytail as she scanned the area.
“You see that guy?” She nudged Elena, flicking her sight to a man in a maintenance uniform standing near the side lot, the one visible past the rotunda toward the athletics wing. He wasn’t carrying tools. Wasn’t doing anything, just… standing. “Don’t look.”
Elena shrugged, barely glancing in the man’s direction. “You need to stop being so paranoid.”
Easy for you to say! Dad had drilled situational awareness into her since she was little. Exits, faces, patterns. Most of the time, it was nothing. This time probably was too. “Yeah, probably just another Mr. Fix-It.”
There weren’t many students left. They stood side by side on the curved walkway near the entrance, mirror images in the daylight—similar height, similar build, dark hair pulled back in low ponytails. Both violinists. Both always early to rehearsal, always lingering afterward. Habits were hard to break.
A couple of kids passed them, one slowing just long enough to glance between them. “Are you twins?”
Elena rolled her eyes. “No.”
Jamie smirked. “Close enough. Bet we could convince people we’re sisters.”
