About the Book
Book Title: The Bible Companion Book 2 Leviticus-Deuteronomy
Author Name: Karen Westbrook Moderow
Genre: Bible Study
Do you struggle to relate to God in the Old Testament?
The Bible Companion Book 2 can help. Its simple one-chapter-a-day format lets you engage with Scripture without the pressure of schedules, homework, or heavy reading loads. Short daily readings and thought-provoking questions help you recognize God’s faithfulness even in your most difficult journey.
Though filled with unfamiliar symbols and rituals, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy hold treasures—the great promises of God. They show us the lengths to which God goes to be in our daily lives. Hard-to-read passages come alive as we travel with Israel to the Promised Land and discover the same God who guided His people in ancient times guides us today. If you want to know what God is like and what matters to Him . . . if you question His love for you . . . if you wonder how believing God can change your life, these books of the Law will speak to you. For personal and group study.
Book Excerpt
The word if tells us the action is voluntary (some translations say when). The fellowship offering is a voluntary act of thanksgiving and hospitality. The giver brings gifts of meat and bread to be shared with others under the umbrella of God’s blessing.17
In the three annual festivals God institutes, fellowship offerings will be one of several types of sacrifices offered in large numbers to feed the worshipers (Ex. 23:14–17 and Num. 29:29). They follow the sin and guilt offerings. The King James Version refers to this sacrifice as the peace offering, using the Hebrew word shalom. Being at peace with God makes it possible to enjoy fellowship with Him and others.
The fellowship offering acknowledges our need for community. God initiates gatherings where meals are shared as acts of worship and celebration. We wouldn’t think of having a party without food. Neither does God. Extending hospitality and breaking bread with people inside and outside the church should mark us as followers of Jesus (Rom. 12:13). “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Heb. 13:2).
COMPANION THOUGHT
If you planned a “fellowship” meal to celebrate your peace with God, who would you invite? Why not do it?
