The godly person delights in the law of the Lord. Obedience to God’s commands allows us to stay in relationship with Him. The picture of the flourishing tree is repeated in Revelation, where all of life is fruitful, nurtured by the river of life that flows from the throne of God (Rev. 22). The godly person’s life is fruitful and productive, flourishing in all seasons. The blessed person will endure forever, but the ungodly will ultimately
perish.
This psalm serves as a gatekeeper to the rest of the book. If we want to know God, if we are willing to let Him purify our hearts, we are invited to enter. The Psalms woo us into God’s presence with beautiful language and imagery, yet these vibrant poems are but reflections of the believer’s abundant life. The Lord desires that we be
fruitful not only for our sakes, but also for others. We are blessed to be a blessing.
Do we want God’s blessing? Do we want to learn how to stop sabotaging our lives? The Psalms say to spend time in His presence. Read God’s Word every day as a lover would read letters from a beloved. Eagerly. Breathlessly.
