More from Mimika
Unstick Your Mind was written from a place of deep pain and frustration. Having experienced anxiety, depression and disillusionment for years, I searched for sound biblical advice to help me get out of my mental rut. What I discovered was a lack of useful content that could help turn my compass toward Christ on my journey to mental wellness. After throwing myself into the world of neuroscience, positive psychology and coaching; I emerged with a fresh perspective and a passionate voice to help fellow Christians navigate the amazing miracle of renewing our mind God’s way. The good news is that you CAN change the way you think and completely overhaul your thinking when you focus on renewing your mind using biblical strategies and neuroscience.
Interview with the Author
- What is the most difficult part about writing for you?
Finding the time to complete each project is always a challenge. As a writer I have so many ideas for books and concepts and I want them done like yesterday! I‘m very ambitious when it comes to picking publication dates that I often underestimate how long writing a book will actually take. I have to block out time in my schedule to focus on writing with a deadline otherwise nothing gets done. I always say writing a book is like having a baby: it’s exciting at the beginning, then the nausea sets in, then it’s a drag to the end, and the final push to get that book baby done is painful! But as soon as the book is born, I forget about the pain and want to do it all again. Aren’t we crazy?
- How do you research for your books?
Writing a book never starts with a complete idea in mind. Often it’s triggered by lightbulb moments when I hear, see or read an idea or concept that gets me excited. I have a bunch of notes on my phone as I collate ideas and research. Once I’ve got a good idea of the framework, chapter layout and reader journey, I then sit down to write it. For the most part I speak easier than I write so I’ve found what works for me is to record a video first (like a podcast, YouTube lesson or a webinar). Then I transcribe it, edit it and get it ready for print.
- How did writing this book grow you spiritually?
For my book “Unstick Your Mind” it was a three year journey. As I learned and grew, the ideas for the book grew. The concept of marrying mindset with our spiritual growth was fascinating to me, especially when I discovered that science is catching up to the bible! God wasn’t joking when He said renewing the mind is so important. So I took that seriously, and dove into researching everything I could find about Christian mindset. After the book was complete I was in awe of how amazing God is and how awesome our minds are!
- What do you like to do when you are not writing?
To take my mind off writing and over thinking, I like to figure skate. It’s a hobby I only started learning at the age of 31 (I was a classical ballet dancer for years). It’s been a great way to move my body and exercise my mind. I love challenging myself by doing competitions and it’s been a fun experience to put my mind to something new. The concepts I learned in skating have proven very useful when it comes to being a writer. Just like on the ice, you’re going to get challenged with hard things, but your job is to get back up again and keep on keeping on.
- Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.
One fascinating fact is that I was born and raised in South Africa, and I’ve been living in the USA since 2006. You can’t tell my accent through my books, but my African-isms often shine through. I like to think of life a little differently and see it through the lens that we are all unique. We have amazing opportunities right in front of us if we open our eyes to see them. I’m so excited to be living my dream of being an author!
