About the Author
Mary Pat Johns’ writing career began once she retired from teaching speech and writing. She has written devotions for an online publication, had short stories published by Chicken Soup for the Soul, and wrote a column for the Victoria Advocate, a local newspaper.
Countin’ On Jesse, her first novel debuted in 2023, and books 2 & 3 of the Valiant series, Lovin’ On Red and Glitter and the Grouch released in 2024. God put it in her heart to tell stories of brave veterans and their reintegration into civilian life after suffering the traumas of war.
She writes Christian romance because when we see life through the hope of Christ’s sacrifice, we find that happily ever after is God’s idea.
More from Mary Pat
The ending of a series is always bittersweet. I will miss the characters, but I remind myself they are in a good place. Kind of like my grown children. They have their own lives to live, and I’m not as “hands-on” as I was during their formative years. If you weren’t around for the beginning of this series, no worries. Each book tells its own story. In the meantime, stay tuned. I have other stories to write. That said, I probably won’t wander too far from Valiant—the strong, safe place where it all began.
Interview with the Author
- What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?
Although it has received a fair amount of attention, I’ll always believe Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte could receive more. It hits all the right notes for me. The themes: romantic love isn’t only for the rich and famous, choosing the right person to marry, and Rochester’s genuine repentance, are profound. If people read more stories like this one (albeit with modern-day circumstances) and remembered the truths buried within, I think our society would be happier as a whole.
- How do you select the names of your characters?
I love to choose character names! Google is my favorite go-to for lists of names. I search until the right name appears. It’s like choosing a gift for someone—you just hunt until you find the item that fits the person.
- What was your hardest scene to write?
The opening scene is the hardest for me. I rarely know where to start and write it several ways before I’m satisfied.
- What is your favorite childhood book?
I loved the Trixie Belden series. The books were both action-packed and character-driven. They were probably the foundation for my love of romantic suspense.
- What comes first, the plot or characters?
For me, they go hand in hand with a nod to the characters first. In my first novel, the male protagonist had a hot temper, so it naturally ensued he would get into a fight at some point in the story. With the help of my crit partner and editors, I was still able to make it a surprise. That tiny fragment of a scene in my head became a part that readers commented on most.
